Acne Comic

First Issue: August 1991
Last Issue: September 1993
Copyright: Acne Publishing Co.

Acne comic spanned 31 issues: those being published every fortnight. Issue number one announced itself as “Britain’s first alternative kids’ comic!” The first issue also introduced readers to Billy Butt, who ‘bops’ Bart Simpson on the front cover.

Viz comic had first appeared in 1979, and had created, what could be considered, a new genre of comics, edgy and irreverent, pushing the envelope in terms of what it meant to be a British comic. Acne continued in a similar vein with 20 Ways To Confuse Your Teacher, Billy Butt He’s a Hard nut and Are You The Skool Bully?

Cartoonist Lee Healey was the major contributor to the publication. Notably, Charlie Brooker of Black Mirror fame was a contributor along with Davy Francis, Tony Husband, Will Kevans, and Lew Stringer.
