The first issue of ‘The Hornet’ with its free gift of a balsa wood aeroplane ‘The kestrel Glider’. Subsequent free gifts were issue no.2, ‘The Catapault Skimmer’ and free with issues no. 3 and 4 were ‘Football’ and ‘Great Goals’ photo albums.

The first issue of ‘The Hornet saw the appearance of the ultimate sportsman, Bernard Briggs in Bouncing Briggs, Wal Loader And J.A.Slade in Slade Of The Pony Express, The Miracle Man From Mars, Alfie Stubbs in Alfy’s Elephant, Deeds Of Glory The Youngest V.C., Muntar in The First Of The Iron Men, Billy Jasper The Golden Blades and Sergeant Gibson in Gibson Of The Guns.
